X-Factor in very general term means the unknown factor or the unexplainable thing which adds a certain value to that object, element or a person.

In relation to a person it is defined as the unexplainable element of a person's attractiveness or sexiness. This is more of a slang and is not a part of the English Language (as in being accepted into the Dictionary) yet.

it is also a very crap t.v. series that i don't think should be legal

Okay, to clarify everything, it isn't a 'was'. In fact, it is on at the moment. The x-Factor is a British T.V program shown on ITV every Saturday and Sunday. It is a 'few month' series, where people can enter and compete in singing to be signed by one of the four current judges, Simon Cowell [Also owner of the show], Louis Walsh, Cheryl Cole and Danni Minougue [sp?].

It doesn't stand for anything specific. The "X Factor" is simply the something special that a specific singer has more than the other contestants.
