Global Warming is the gradual and continuous rise in the temperature of the Earth's surface and atmosphere, due to the presence of certain gasses like, water vapour, carbon-dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane, which traps heat and solar energy from the sun. Without these gases, heat would escape back into outer space and earths average temperature would be at about 33 degrees colder than it is today.

Since the late 1800s, the global average temperature has increased about 0.7 to 1.4 degrees F (0.4 to 0.8 degrees C). Many experts estimate that the average temperature will rise an additional 2.5 to 10.4 degrees F (1.4 to 5.8degrees C) by 2100. That rate of increase would be much larger than most past rates of increase and this might have a lot of adverse effect on life sustainance on the geospheres in general.

The sun radiates its energy in the form of rays of different wavelengths sent to the earth referred to as the "Electromagnetic Radiation". This solar radiations, consists of the potentially dangerous "gamma rays" and "x-rays", which are mostly absorbed by the ionosphere at the uppermost layers of earths atmosphere. It is also made up of the "infrared rays","visible light" and "ultraviolet rays". Scientists refers to the entire solar spectrum (ie, electromagnetic radiations) as "shortwave radiation" because the peak of intensity lies in the "short wavelength".

Of all the solar rays the most influential to us, is the visible light and ultraviolet rays which makes up the bulk that we receive. Most of these ultraviolet rays are absorbed by the"ozone layer", which is a part of the upper atmosphere called the"stratosphere", thereby protecting the earth from its harmful and deadly effects. This region is called ozone layer, because it contains ozone in large quantities.

Ozone layer is a "buffer zone" of "pale-blue" gas located between 20-35 km in average, up in the atmosphere. Ozone is an unstable form of oxygen with three (3) atoms in a molecule, this means, ozone is made up of excess oxygen. Over time the ozone layer has been greatly under threat by man's earthly activities that have unwittingly tampered with the natural processes taking place in this protective layer. For decades, human factories, cars and other machineries have spewed and flared billions of tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, most of these gases contains Chloro-fluorocarbons (CFCs), which are wonder gasses that do not rust, explode, burn or pose immediate dangers to users.

CFCs are found chiefly in refrigerants, air conditioners, fire extinguishers, plastic foams, aerosol sprays amid many other consumable products. When released they react, devouring highly unstable "ozone molecules", making the stratospheric atmosphere free of a "protective cover", and replacing with "ozone void space", called " the ozone hole".

All of such and more gases that endangers the ozone layer are combinely referred to as "Ozone Depleting Gasses" (ODG's) and "Ozone Depleting Compounds" (ODC's). Due to the increase in concentration of greenhouse gases (ie, ODG's), additional heat or thermal radiations have been prevented from leaving the earth. Irrespective of the components within the atmosphere, solar radiations just enough, still finds its way through and gets to the earth's surface to provide us with warmth and heat energy. This is simply because electromagnetic radiations travels at shortwave lengths. The earth itself radiates the energy that it has received from the sun, but at longer wavelengths, these outgoing rays that are supposed to be sent back to outer space, are being absorbed by the atmosphere, since they cannot pass through the large mass of artificial or human influenced gases, because of change in their wavelengths, and instead they are re-radiated back to earth.

In essence, these gases are trapping excess heat in the earth's atmosphere in much the same way that a windshield traps solar energy that enters a car, thereby creating a "Heat-Trapping Mechanism", - "The Greenhouse Effect" / "Global warming", resulting in "Global Climate Change".
