H1N1/09 (referred to as "Swine Flu" early on) is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in people in Mexico in April 2009. Other countries, including the US and Canada, have reported people sick with this new virus. This virus is spreading from person-to-person, in the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread.

See the related questions below for more about swine flu and the meaning of A-H1N1/09 "swine flu".

The effect if the H1N1 on a nation is unknown, but there are 2 possible answers to this question. Both answers depend on the availability of the vaccine, one with one without.

With the vaccine people will suffer slight symptoms and cause no real damage economically or otherwise.

Without the Vaccine the H1N1 virus will cause the oldest (80+) of the nation will suffer heavy loses, as will those under the age of 5yrs, any one in between should have the defenses to cope, obviously there are exceptions The biggest effect will be on the economy In this fragile state the economies of the world could suffer another down turn as offices and shops become more and more sparsely staffed, good news for agencies as short term healthy staff will be wanted. (will wellness be more popular than qualifications?). Some companies will go under and schools will empty, over the course of a month the whole economic infrastructure will come to a halt. With full respect, it will be like 9/11 for that nation, but everyone CAN'T work as opposed to liking wounds. Health services will also be decimated. But the ultimate silver lining is that what will start will finish slow is the rate of infection until literally one third infects the rest, and within two weeks of this happening, it will be over everyone will have had it and the nation will move on and the economic pause will restart
