A list of works which are accepted as a true part of a collection. The word comes from its application to The Bible. "Canon law" is the law of the church, and that law has dictated what is and what isn't a part of the Bible. Genesis is; Archie and Jughead is not. Genesis is therefore "canon", one of the accepted books of the Bible according to canon law.
The same principle can be applied, for example, to the Works of Shakespeare. Hamlet is canon; it is accepted by everyone as one of Shakespeare's works. The Second Maiden's tragedy is not canon; it is not generally accepted as Shakespeare's work.
Canon means rule. A list of books that are considered important is a guide or rule for reading. So a literary canon is a suggested reading list.
Not everyone agrees on which works should be included in it
One criticism of the existing Western literary canon is that it mostly excludes women and minorities.
Literature in the literary canon must be able to be passed down by generations; they must possess excellent literary techniques, appeal to a variety of people, and provoke thought.
Western literary societies have a large amount of consensus on which works should be included in the literary canon. However sometimes up to 10% of these may be disagreed upon. This number changes as the make up of literary societies and academia changes from year to year.
D. Should artistic merit be the sole criterion for inclusion in the canon? Or, simply: What are the criteria for inclusion in the literary canon?
