The technical difference between monophony and polyphony is the number of tones existent or otherwise capable of being played. Monophony, meaning that only 1 tone is present and typically consisting of sharp melodies. When a new note is struck the last note is abruptly stopped. Polyphony, being the counter-part to monophony, is the presence of multiple notes at one time, allowing for chords and harmonies. Different phones depending on their processor may have varying degrees of polyphony. Typically anything above monophony is 4 to 6.
