Reap means to gather or take (such as a crop, harvest, etc.).

Sow means to plant seed for: to sow a crop.

So if you were a farmer, you would be able to gather only what you planted.

In the sense of this saying, it means you cannot escape the consequences of your actions. What you do comes back to you.

This common saying is often seen this way: "As ye sow, so shall ye reap," or simply, "You reap what you sow." The words are used to illustrate the principle that one's rewards -- or penalties -- in life are generally a result of one's prior choices and deeds. The phrase dates back to ancient times.

From the King James Version of the Holy Bible, at Job 4:8, we have, "Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same." Decades before the birth of Christ, the Roman philosopher Cicero famously declared, "As you have sown so shall you reap." Perhaps most familiar to many people, The Bible's New Testament says at Galatians 6:7, "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."

Galatians 6:7, 8 - Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. This is not a proverb, but a plain teaching that one's efforts are directly related to one's rewards.

Answer 1

The scripture you mention is found at Galatians 6:7-9, and reading around it can help decipher it's meaning: " . . .Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life..." (NIV) This principal proves true in every facet of life.

If we "sow" corn, those seeds will GROW corn. If we "sow" beans, those seeds will GROW beans. If we plant beets, we will NOT get brocolli.

Same in life...

*If we "sow" with a view to satisfying our FLESH, our physical imperfections ...greed, selfishness, dishonesty, we'll "reap" hostility, a complaining spirit and a sour mood, lack of trust, isolation, loss of friendships, possibly even jail, or worse. The seeds of SELFISHNESS grow pain, and working to fill only our physical desires leads ultimately to death, with no hope.(Proverbs 14:12)(Romans 1:24-32)(1 Corinthians 6:9, 10) (Galatians 5:19-21)

*If we "sow" with a view to filling our Spiritual needs, studying God's word, gaining fine spiritual qualities, love of God, love of neighbor, good personal habits, honesty, dependability, cleanliness, friendliness, we'll "reap" friends and a good conscience, a good relationship with God, and joy.

The seeds of SELFLESSNESS grow joy, and working to fill our spiritual needs leads ultimately to everlasting life and an end to all pain and suffering.(John 17:3)(John 3:16) (Revelation 21:4)(Matthew 6:33)(Galatians 5:22-26)

Answer 2

To the congregations in the Roman province of Galatia in Asia Minor, the Apostle Paul wrote: "Do not be misled: God is not one to be mocked. For whatever a man is sowing, this he will also reap; because he who is sowing with a view to his flesh will reap corruption from his flesh, but he who is sowing with a view to the spirit will reap everlasting life from the spirit." (Gal. 6:7,8)

"Whatever a man is sowing, this he will also reap." (Galatians 6:7) Sometimes people sow by making bad choices and reap a measure of suffering as a consequence. They may choose to drive recklessly, resulting in an accident. Many choose to smoke cigarettes, leading to Heart disease or lung cancer. Those who choose to engage in immoral sexual conduct risk suffering ruined family relationships, loss of self-respect, sexually transmitted diseases, and unwanted pregnancies. People may seek to blame God for such suffering, but they are actually the victims of their own bad decisions. Ultimately, no human is exempt from the consequences of his actions.

The idiom "You reap what you sow" comes from farming. A farmer sows seeds. The type of seed he sows is what he will reap.

If he sows corn, he will produce corn. If he sows wheat, he will produce wheat. Etc.

Other examples:

If you study your vocabulary words, you will produce better recall of vocabulary words.

If you walk 1 mile, you will lose weight.

If you clean your room, it will look nicer.

Another way of saying this idiom:

You get out of it (some task) what you put into it.

...............................................................................................................

This is an idiom and most idioms do not have literal meanings so the example of sowing corn and getting corn is not really the correct meaning of this idiom.

This idiom means - you will eventually have to face up to the consequences of your actions ie everything you do has repercussions, it comes back to you one way or another. If you make bad choices in life you will get bad results.

This idiom probably comes from the Bible:

Job 4:8 Even as I have seen, Those who plow iniquity And sow trouble reap the same.

Galatians 6:7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.

In basic terms, to sow is like to plant something in a field, such as a crop, and to reap is to harvest that crop. Metaphorically, if you reap what you sow, you're harvesting what you planted, meaning that you're going to face the consequences of your actions.
