It's about someone with a fear of commitment.
When you first meet someone and like them but know it's going to end eventually. The beginning is the start of the ending. Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust. All beginnings must have an ending. He's also telling her that it's not about her so much as him and his fear of the ending. And that even when it's over he's ok and will live but not as happily. And he knows this about himself going into it. Does that make sense? (I'm that way too)
