Luigi Pirandello (28 June 1867 10 December 1936) was an Italian dramatist, novelist, poet and short story writer who was awarded the 1934 Nobel Prize for Literature.
Pirandello left no public views on war, although his son Stefano enlisted when Italy entered WW1, and was soon captured by the Austro-Hungarians and was held as a POW.
However Pirandello benefited from Mussolini's fascist government. Describing himself as "a Fascist because I am Italian," he was mocked in Italy's intellectual circles for his public devotion to Mussolini - who had granted him ownership of the Teatro d'Arte di Roma.
It is said his play, The Giants of the Mountain, is evidence of his realization that the fascists were hostile to culture; yet, during a later appearance in New York, Pirandello distributed a statement announcing his support of Italy's annexation of Abyssinia (Ethiopia), and he donated his Nobel Prize medal to the Fascist government to be melted down for bullets for the Abyssina Campaign.
However he argued with Italy's fascist leaders and in 1927 ripped-up his fascist membership card in an argument with the secretary-general of the Fascist Party, so it would seem his affection for Mussolini and the Fascist Party was primarily opportunistic.

He is described as having a cheerful demeanor and a habit of smoking his pipe calmly while everyone else is panicking. This characterization highlights his stoic and detached nature amidst chaos.
