Previously chloramphenicol was the drug of choice for the treatment of typhoid fever. However, with the development of safer and more effective drugs, the use of chloramphenicol has declined.

Drugs used in treatment range from familiar antibiotics, amoxillin and ampicillin, to combination treatment with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole.

Where resistant strains of Salmonella enterica typhi are found, 3rd generation cephalosporins (like ceftraixone and cefotaxime), and flouroquinolones (like ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin) are the drugs of choice for typhoid fever.

Because of serious side effects, other antibiotics has replaced it such as Ciprofloxacin, Ampicillin, Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim. Prior to the use of antibiotics, the Death Rate was as high as 20%. Currently, it's at a 1-2% rate. Pneumonia is often a major complication of typhoid fever. Typhoid fever is a common epidemic, but luckily there are measures to take against it. To prevent it proper disposal is advised. Try to anti-fly proof your house, and drink water that is purified. (e.g. boiled water)

After you have the fever, it is pretty easy to cure it. Get PLENTY of sleep, always keep hydrated(your best bet is orange juice, which actually helps to fight off the fever), fresh fruits and easily digestible foods, and you will recover in no time.

What is the complete treatment of typhoid?

Treatment of typhoid is complete, when the patient is no more the carrier of typhoid fever. It was a common problem in olden days when chloramphenicol was used to treat the typhoid fever. Chloramphenicol is a bacteriostatic drug. With the advent of bactericidal drugs, you have less number of carriers of typhoid fever. You have to do repeated culture of stool sample to rule out the carrier stage. Some times the typhoid bacteria is hidden in gall bladder and then you may have to remove the gall bladder. How can you treat typhoid dengue malaria together?

It is very common practice in developing countries to treat the typhoid fever as a case of malaria, specially in the first week. You tell patient that he has malaria. He does not respond to your antimalarial treatment. Then you have no option but to tell the patient that he has got both malaria and typhoid at the same time. The fact is that typhoid is usually difficult to diagnose in the first week of fever. It is always better to rule out the malarial fever by giving the antimalarial treatment in first week of febrile illness.
