The moral of the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding is that power must be handled delicately. Golding also teaches the reader that evil is not restricted to those who continuously do evil deeds, but that people who are inherently good may sometimes commit to doing evil acts, as shown to the reader by Ralph's character. The reader is shown that evil may dwell within each of us, and that it is up to each person to control their own actions and fate.

The whole book is symbolic in nature except the rescuue in the end where adult life appears, dignified and capable......

"Lord of the Flies explores the dark side of humanity, the savagery that underlies even the most civilized human beings. Golding intended this novel as a tragic parody of children's adventure tales, illustrating humankind's intrinsic evil nature. He presents the reader with a chronology of events leading a group of young boys from hope to disaster as they attempt to survive their uncivilized, unsupervised, isolated environment until rescued."

A group of English schoolboys ranging from 6 years of age up to 12 years old crash land on an uninhabited tropical island. The negligence of the boys leads to the dissapearence of a small boy with a birth mark on his face. Over a period of time the boys plans to build huts and keep a signal fire going are gradually eroded by the desire to hunt and kill pigs and also by the increasing fear of an imagined "beast." The authority of the "sensible" leader Ralph is continually challenged by Jack, who is obsessed by hunting and the thought of holding power. Two boys, Simon and Piggy are murdered and the rest of the boys, led by Jack, set fire to the entire island in their attempts to hunt down and kill Ralph. At this point a naval vessel spots the smoke caused by the fire and an officer lands on the island to rescue the boys. The book ends.
