There was an article four years ago (Scapoli et al. 2007. Theoretical Population Biology, 71:37-48) where the authors analyzed surnames in Western Europe (BeNeLux, Germany,France, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, and Italy), and the most common surname is Garcia, of course. The ones that follow are mostly Spanish (Fernandez, Lopez, Martinez, Sanchez, Rodriguez, Gonzalez, Perez). The next one is not Spanish (Mueller), then Martin (which is common to France and Spain), Gomez, Schmidt, Ruiz, Alvarez, etc... The list with the 100 most common surnames is the article itself
