What to Give Up for LentWhat to give up for Lent will be different for different people. I believe the idea is to give up something that is important to you. For example, if you absolutely love to eat, you could fast. It could also be something that you promise God you will do every day, like reciting the Rosary or reading a certain number of chapters in The Bible. Others may feel that adjusting their spending habits, going without for a time and giving to those who have less are worthwhile sacrifices fitting to the season. The whole point is that it be meaningful, not just something that really doesn't mean much to you.

Catholics (at least 14 years old) in the United States are obliged to abstain from the eating of meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays during the season of Lent. Catholics (from 18 to 60 years old) are also obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday. Self-imposed observance of fasting on all weekdays of Lent is strongly recommended. This is where people also give up chocolate, sarcasm, or something else for Lent.

Can you eat the item you give up for Lent anytime during Lent?

Roman Catholic AnswerThat depends. If you are giving up something voluntarily, then you sort of make the rules, don't you? Remember though, that Sundays are never fast days. So, if you have given up something for Lent, you might have given it up until after the Easter Vigil, or you might have given it up just on fast days, which used to be every weekday of Lent, except for the Annunication and the Solemnity of St. Joseph. It's sort of up to you, and what you want to offer God.
