Leavenworth was one of the worst prisons back in the day, the most dangerous prisoners now are sent to ADX in Colorado but they rarely have contact with other inmates. I just did 6 years in California and Pelican Bay, Calipatria, High Desert, and New Folsom level 4 yards are by far the most dangerous prisons in California and probably in the whole country

How did Prisoners of war Post get to their families during World War 2 without the planes or ships being destroyed?

Generally it was transported to & fro (In Europe at least) by the Red Cross. This applies to British & US forces. The Red Cross did much to ensure the safety and survival of hundreds & thousands of prisoners. There is then a vast contrast between on one hand the treatment of German & Italian prisoners held by the Allies & the Russian prisoners of the Nazis and the German prisoners of the Russians & similarly the Japanese Allied prisoners: The conditions were appalling. There were very few Japanese prisoners: Surrender wasn't an option.

What does being held in captivity mean?

To be put into a cell, like at a zoo, but this term can be used for people too. Prisoners of war, slavery, and other things like that are good examples of being held in captivity. Another example would be a cat, completely dependent on a human for life, but takes every chance to be its own being and to get away. A cat might need us for life, but they are naturally independent... we just domesticated them and now they have no choice but to put up with us.
