Most Difficult Mountain to Climb
Seems as though, from what I've read and heard, that K2 is the most difficult mountain to climb. Though it is not as tall as other mountains (such as Everest), its steep ridges are covered in loose, rocky snow that make for a challenging climb to the peak which few have managed to accomplish.
The above answer is both right and wrong. K2 is the second tallest mountain on earth. Everest happens to be the ONLY mountain that is taller than K2. Although the summit of Everest is at a higher altitude, K2 is considered a more difficult climb, due in part to its terrible weather and comparatively greater height above surrounding terrain. The mountain is believed by many to be the world's most difficult and dangerous climb, hence its nickname "the Savage Mountain." As of August 2004, only 246 people have completed the ascent, compared with 2,238 individuals who have ascended the more popular target of Everest. At least 56 people have died attempting the climb.
I'd add Baintha Brakk (aka The Ogre) to K2 as the worlds hardest mountain to climb. Located in the Panmah Muztagh region of Karakoram, in Pakistan, it was first climbed in 1977 by Doug Scott and Chris Bonnington. On the descent Scott broke both legs. Later, Bonington broke two ribs and contracted pneumonia, during an epic week long ascent in a storm to base camp.
Twenty four years passed before the next successful ascent, with 20 failed expeditions in between.
