In Western art, Manet's 'Olympia' is one painting that was controversial in it's own time. This is a subjective answer because there will always be controversial art. Marcel Duchamp's 'Nude Descending a Staircase #2' was also very controversial when it was first shown in America at the Armory Show in 1912. Courbet's 'Origin of the World' (1866) is also a very controversial painting. In the one hundred forty years since these paintings many more controversial pieces of art have been created. This however does not touch on the numerous other Eastern or Indian pieces of art, and demonstrates the difficulty in choosing one specific piece of art.

The Mona Lisa, it is by far the most recognizable and well known work of art in history. There are others like The Creation of Adam, a work by Michelangelo, which adorns the ceiling of the Sistine chapel.

The most famous painting in the world is arguably Mona Lisa by Leonardo da vinci. This is probably because of the woman's enigmatic smile in the picture.
