Start with a good pair of hiking boots that offer ankle support and protection. Tennies and flip flops are not made for the desert. Wear loose fitting, light colored clothing. Long pants and long sleeves offer protection form the sun and from some of the nasty plants that can puncture and slash the skin. A good hat should shade your head as well as your eyes.
