The term 'vegetable strainer' can actually have two meanings. It can either refer to a colander which is used to drain the excess water off of fruits, vegetables and other foods such as pastas, that have to be boiled in water or it can refer to an accessory for a food processing machine or mixer that fruits and vegetables are put in to before they are squeezed to be made into either a sauce or juice.
A vegetable colander can be used to hold vegetables as you wash them under running water or to drain the liquid from them after they are cooked.

Yes its a compound you can easily use a a strainer and strain out the soup. But one thing you should know is that soup and your vegetables mixed together is a mixture. But don't even try to use a strainer to get the vegetables out of your soup you wont get the vegetables you need for today. :)
