It is unlike most other mammals. The largest mammal group, Eutheria, give birth to fully developed live young. These are fed by suckling from nipples. Eutheria are found all over the world, and account for almost all mammalian species.
Marsupials, which are found mostly in Australia plus a few in the Americas, give birth to very underdeveloped young. After birth they crawl up the mothers belly into a pouch. Inside the pouch is an area of skin which if licked emits milk.
Scientists used to believe that most primitive of all are the monotremes, but have since revised their opinion, no longer regarding monotremes as primitive. Found only in Australia, there are only three species, the platypus and two species of echidna.
