Gene Kelly was taught tap dancing by his brother Fred so they could help family finances when their father lost his job in the Depression, and so that Gene could work his way through college. They won many amateur night contests and played in cheap clubs and speakeasies. He had attended dance classes during childhood - reluctantly. They started a dancing school in the basement of their house and later in hired buildings, and Gene gradually became more and more involved in dancing. Each summer if they had saved enough money they went to Chicago where Gene studied ballet under Berenice Holmes, and learned Spanish dancing from Angel Cansino, the uncle of Rita Hayworth.
