In a Yemeni Cabinet decree issued on April 29, 2008 the Yemeni Council of Ministers declared the Arabian Leoaprd (Panthera pardus nimr) as Yemen's official national animal. This decree followed an intensive lobbying effort on the part of the Yemeni Leopard Recovery Program (ylrp@yemenileopard.org) and was put forward by Yemeni Minister for Water and the Environment HE Abdulrahman Al Eryani and Yemeni Minister for Tourism HE Nabil Al Faqih. In the same decree the Golden-winged Grosbeak (Rhynchostruthus socotranus) was named as Yemen's national bird, the Dragon's Blood Tree (Dracaena cinnabari) as the national tree, and the Jebel Iraf Aloe (Aloe irafensis) as the national flower. Fewer than 200 wild Arabian Leopards are believed to exist although accurate population estimates are lacking. Fewer than 10 are known from the Negev Desert and Judean highlands of Israel, with further 30 or so having been documented by camera trapping in Dhofar, Oman. Yemen is believed to be a key country for the survival of Arabian Leopards in the wild and the Yemeni Leopard Recovery Program continues to work towards an expanding population of wild leopards in Yemen.
