New Zealand does not officially have a national flower. However the Kowhai (Sophora microphylla) is considered by many to be the national flower of New Zealand. A small to medium sized tree, it blooms in spring, covering itself with yellow flowers, turning gardens to gold.

It doesn't take an act of Parliament or any sort of government decree to declare a national flower; it just takes the population to decide. So some regard another flower: that of the Pohutukawa, a North Island coastal tree with brilliant red blooms, as their national flower. New Zealand recognizes the silver fern, which appears on their military uniforms and many sports uniforms, as a national symbol.
We don't have an officially accepted national flower, but if there were one, it would probably be the kowhai, a sulphur-yellow pendulous bloom on an evergreen tree.

New Zealand does not have an official national flower, but most would regard the Kowhai as an unofficial national flower. The Kowhai is a forest margin tree with profuse pendulous yellow/gold flowers, very small round leaves and a graceful form.

The Silver fern is one of the most famous plants of New Zealand and is used as as the symbol many of their sports teams such as the All Blacks (National Rugby team). It is a large tree fern with pale white undersides to the leaves, hence its name.

Another contender for the title of New Zealand's national flower is the Pohutukawa. This coastal tree's gorgeous red flowers bloom around Christmas, earning it the nickname 'The New Zealand Christmas Tree', however it is primarily only found in the North Island.

As far as I know, New Zealand has no 'state flower'. If it did, it would probably be the Pohutukawa, or perhaps the Mt Cook Lily
