Various authors report different "normal" ranges for the diameter of the common bile duct. The consensus is that most people have a common bile duct diameter of around 5mm, +/- 1 mm. However, there are reports were people with no hepatobilliary disease have a "normal" common bile duct size up to 10 mm. Also, there is a correlation between common bile duct diameter and age. Most physicians would like to check things further if the common bile duct diameter is greater than about 7 mm, particularly if there are symptoms indicating hepatobilliary disease (abdominal pain with or without jaundice, fever etc.). Finally, even "normal" common bile duct sizes do not exclude the possibility of disease (such as stones).

The abdominal pain, fever, vomiting (green 'bile' from your stomach), and very light colored stools (or bowel movements) are symptoms of gall bladder disease. Many lose weight while they have gall bladder problems, because the bile (which comes from the liver and goes into the gall bladder) backs up into the stomach as it tries to digest certain foods (greasy foods, red meats, dairy products, products high in uric acids) and can make you very nauseous. Sometimes the gall or 'bile' in the gall bladder coagulates into stones (starting about the size of grains of sand, growing to marble sized stones) which can get stuck in the little tube leading from your liver to the gall bladder (the common bile duct). When this 'common bile duct is blocked', the 'bile' (which gives the brown coloring of bowel movements) can't get to the stomach to digest the food, this can be very painful, and can be lethal if your liver gets infected. Why does your doctor suspect a stone in the common bile duct rather than a tumor as a result of a CT scan?
Stones and Tumors will have different characteristics on a CT scan. Stones are going to be within the bile duct, where as tumors are likely to be on the tissue surrounding the duct itself. The stones should also appear much brighter than the surrounding tissue (almost white) where tumors are going to only be slightly lighter. Likely, based on size, location, and appearance, your physician has diagnosed a stone rather than a tumor. However, if you or your physician are concerned that it may be a tumor, you can have a PET scan done. If it is a tumor, it should light up brightly, if it is a stone, then it shouldn't really show a difference. If you are concerned about it being cancer, bring this up to your doctor especially if there is a family history. A PET scan is something that can easily be done to rule out a tumor.
