Indonesia was ruled by many kingdoms prior to the arrival of Dutch Colonial. Two of the most powerful among these kingdoms are Sriwijaya and Majapahit. Indonesia was also referred to as "Nusantara" in many old books written before the arrival of Dutch. During Dutch colonialization (first Dutch trade expedition came to Indonesia in 1596 AD), the official name of the area was Nederlands Indie. Later the name "Indonesia" was used during the Youths Congress on October 28, 1928 and became official name for the country when it declared its independence on August 17, 1945.
