Hi I was told when doing an automotive mechanics course at TAFE that Mercedies Benz was the first car manufacturer but I am not sure what year. Hope this help's for whatever reason.
That is correct, the first car, patented by Karl Benz in 1886. The oldest American auto manufacture was Oldsmobile.
