In one sense there is no opposite to Antarctica. Antarctica is the name we give to the continent around the Earth's south pole. Parts of the area labelled Antarctica are land, some of it covered in ice. Some of it is comprised of purely of huge ice sheets over an ocean, which have, until recently, been treated as permanent. However, there are large amounts of land. Logically, therefore, its opposite would be the continent around the north pole - but there isn't one.

At the north pole we have the Arctic Ocean. Some of this is covered in ice all the year round, which is why you can see pictures of men walking to the North Pole, but the extent of this ice varies with the seasons, and also varies from year to year. However, there is no land underneath the Arctic ice.

Of course, you could say that since Antarctica is the coldest, the highest and the driest place on earth that its "opposite" would the lowest, wettest and warmest place. That would be difficult to find in one place, but perhaps some of the underwater volcanoes in the deep ocean places might be a candidate being deep, wet and (where the lava pours out) hot.

Take your pick of these possibilities!

What does Antarctica mean?

Antarctic comes via Latin from the Greek Antarktikos.Antarctica is at the opposite end of the earth from the Arctic, so, it is the Antipode of the Arctic - ANT-ARCTIC.The word Antarctica is based in the Greek word for bear: Arctos. Arctos is the name of a constellation visible from the northern hemisphere. The northern polar region is named Arctic, after Arctos. In advance of understanding the mysteries of the opposite polar region, they named it anyway, as opposite of Arctic or Anti-Arktos, which evolved into Antarctic, the region and Antarctica, the name of the continent.
