In the normal comparison of emotions, LOVE is the opposite of hate.

If you actually mean opposite (the most reversed factors possible) then I'd say indifference. In both love and hate, you care about whoever/whatever you're loving/hating (although in different ways).

Ex. You love a person. You hear that something awful happened to them. You'd want to know more, right? If you hated that person (and I mean actually HATE, not just dislike), you'd also want to know more about what happened to them.

Additionally, love relationships break apart because of indifference much more often than hate. ("You don't care about me at all!") If you actually hated somebody, you wouldn't be together with them.

Ex. Your girlfriend comes home all excited because she passed her driver's test. You go "Yeah, great" while your eyes stay focused on the TV.

ANSWER #1 The opposite depends on the aspect of anger being examined.

1) Forgiveness. The opposite of being angry (to hold a grudge) is to forgive.

2) Affection. The opposite of showing hate or ill will is to show love or goodwill.

3) Fear. The emotion of anger is based on an instinctive urge to attack. The opposite instinct is the urge to flee, which humans call fear

ANSWER#2

The opposite of anger is social affiliation. The functional purpose of anger is to establish boundaries, hierarchies and divisions in social groups. Its opposite, emotions of social affiliation, harmonize and connect individuals within social groups. Examples of these emotions that are well document by research include both attachment and empathy.

Other proposed opposites of anger have included:

1) "Forgiveness. The opposite of being angry (to hold a grudge) is to forgive."

Forgiveness is not an opposite of anger. There is not evidence that it is a basic emotion with specific neuropsychological underpinnings distinct from attachment, empathy, and dominance hierarchies seen across species.

2) "Affection. The opposite of showing hate or ill will is to show love or goodwill."

Affection is not an opposite of anger. Love and anger often co-occur.

3) "Fear. The emotion of anger is based on an instinctive urge to attack. The opposite instinct is the urge to flee, which humans call fear."

Fear is not an opposite of anger. A common response to fear is "fight" - which under this definition would be equated with the emotion anger. Other responses to fear include "flight" and "freeze" - which would then be classified as the opposite of anger. It is clear that fear and anger are separate core emotions. Indeed, the neuropsychological bases of aggression and of fear are not the same.
