The Lord of the Rings is one novel divided into six books, and published in three volumes. The books are simply titled Book I, II, and following. The three volumes are: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Titles are usually shortened to The Fellowship of the Ring The Two Towers The Return of the King

Here are some alternate titles that JRR Tolkien suggested:

For six volumes:

I: The Ring Sets Out

II: The Ring Goes South

III: The Treason of Isengard

IV: The Ring Goes East

V: The War of the Ring

VI: The End of the Third Age

I: The First Journey

II: The Journey of the Nine Companions

III: The Treason of Isengard

IV: The Journey of the Ringbearers

V: The War of the Ring

VI: The End of the Third Age

For three volumes:

I: The Shadow Grows

II: The Ring in the Shadow

III: The War of the Ring

I: The Return of the Shadow

II: The Shadow Lengthens

III: The Return of the King

As an alternate title of the whole book:

The Magic Ring

The books are traditionally published as The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. And that's the order you should read them in. I'm pretty sure the movies used the same titles, if that's what you were asking about.

The order in which the Lord of the Rings trilogy was published (in 1954 and 1955), and should be read is:

  • The Fellowship of the Ring
  • The Two Towers
  • The Return of the King

The trilogy was begun as a sequel to Tolkien's 1937 children's fantasy, The Hobbit.

While in the published version they are titled simply as Book I, Book II, etc. there were originally going to be titles for each Book before The Lord of the Rings was split by the publisher to be printed in 3 separate volumes of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. Based off suggestions by Tolkien, posthumously 1999 British millennium set had each of the 6 Books (with a 7th for the Appendices) in their own Volume Titled as thus:

I: The Ring Sets Out

II: The Ring Goes South

III: The Treason of Isengard

IV: The Ring Goes East

V: The War of the Ring

VI: The End of the Third Age
