What is the origin of the name 'soccer' as opposed to 'football'?
Answer:
'Soccer' is used to distinguish the game from other sports in countries that have football as a term for other sports. The term soccer is derived from the original full name 'Association Football'. Association Football was the name given to the sport when the rules were codified in 1863 and the Football Association was formed. By the late 19th Century the English had started to use 'soccer' instead of football so it would not be confused with Rugby Football, which eventually became known as just Rugby. The word soccer is sometimes accredited to Charles Wreford Brown who is said to have coined the phrase in 1880.
The word Football is used around the world in countries throughout Europe, Asia and Africa, but there are still countries where football means something different. In the USA, NFL is known as football. its is called football thts the name
