Bus is the short version of the word Omnibus, which is a four wheel public vehicle with seats. The prefix Omni in Latin means 'all' and omnibus in Latin means 'for all'. The word was introduced into France in the early 1800's meaning, at that time, a man or boy who assists a waiter at a restaurant.

The original unshotenned name for a bus was an "Omnibus Vehicle". Omnibus means "for everyone" in latin and the term can be found beind used for regular scheduled horse drawn services available to the general public as far back as the 1820s. With the devlopment of it the internal combustion engine and going into the twentieth century Omnibus and Autobus were farily common terms (Trolleybuses were versions powered from overhead electric lines) but the shortenned term "bus" quickly gained almost universal usage.
