The odour is mainly paint and insulation drying out from the warmth of the appliance when it is running for the first few times.
Also, if the appliance includes an electric motor with brushes running over a commutator, there can sometimes be a distinctive "electric sparks" odour from the brushes and the commutator's contacts until the brushes have fully "bedded-in". Depending on the appliance, if the smell does not start to disappear after using the appliance regularly for say a week or a month then there may some faulty wiring or insulation that is smouldering inside and such a fault should be investigated by the supplier's warranty service engineer or a licensed electrician or - if the appliance is small enough - why not just take it back to the shop and ask them to advise you?
