"The Pardoner's Tale" is a story within Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" that follows three riotous young men who embark on a quest to find and kill Death. Along the way, they encounter an old man who tells them Death can be found under a tree, where they ultimately find not Death, but a hoard of treasure. Greed and betrayal lead to the downfall of all three men in a tale that reflects themes of avarice and moral corruption.

The story begins with a preacher talking about how money is the root of all evil ( in actuality he does his preachings for money). Then he begins to tell a story about how the love and want for money is evil.

The story begins with 3 drunk rioters. They are standing by a street when a wagon with a coffin roll past them. There is a young man behind it, and one of the rioters asked the boy who was it that died. the boy said that it was a man that the rioter knew. then the rioter asked what or who killed him? the boy said that death did it (he died of natural causes but death is being made out to sound like a person).

Keep in mind that they are drunk, so they don't know any better. The 3 rioters go and look for death to either kill him or beat him up (morons). and lately there has been a plague in a town over and people have been dying so the 3 rioters go look for death there. while looking for death they run into a very old man that seem to be close to dying. The 3 rioters think that the old man is an accomplice with death and threaten him to tell them where he is. The old man says that death is under a tree nearby. the 3 rioters go, when they get there they find a pile of gold.

They all get excited and they decide to celebrate over finding the gold. they send one rioter to go get 3 bottles of alcohol (just to make this not confusing let's call this rioter rioter #3...and the others rioter #1 and 2). so while rioter #3 is gone the other two decide that when he returns they will kill him so that they can take his share of the gold. Now back to rioter #3, when he is out he also decides to kill off rioter #1 and 2 by poisoning their bottles. when he (#3) comes back, rioters #1 and 2 kill him. when the two rioters celebrate, they drink from the poisonous bottles and die.

Then we go back to the preacher and he says how the want for money is bad and to give him money for their sins FOR wanting money.
