Most of the people believe that Moses had thrust his staff into the Red Sea, and it rose. He got his people through, and when the Egyptian armies tried to cross, the waters came crashing down on them, drowning many.

The author of book of Exodus has narrated a story about division of the 'Red Sea'. While Israelites were fleeing Egypt the sea had blocked their way at a place called Baalzephon, Seeing Egyptian soldiers in pursuit, they prayed to God and suddenly some power divided the sea.

Israelite managed to escape through the divided passage, but Egyptian soldiers were drowned into the sea because the water had returned to its original position.

In fact, Israelites had crossed the 'Sea of Reeds 'and not the 'Red Sea'. Red Sea is far down below the Sinai Peninsula. However, what had caused the division of the 'The Sea of Reeds'?

So far, we have believed the occurrence without any fuss and ado. It was not a kind of distortion of water surface, which usually occur during high spring and weak neap tides. We know high spring tides occur while Sun is reinforcing moon's gravitational forces and weak neap tides occur when the Sun is positioned 90 degrees to the moon. However, there is no gainsaying that 'Division of the Sea' was some work of celestial mechanics.

Sun and Moon are the only two objects, which exert their tidal forces on earth. Moon has a tidal force of 2.21 and Sun has a tidal force of 1:00. The tidal forces of all other planets are almost insignificant.

We know that the alignment of Sun and Moon in various degrees result in tidal force in varying degrees. Maximum gravitational pull of all the planets together, even if they are at a closest distance to earth cannot distort the seawater surface to the extent that it may divide the sea. Moreover, it is not only the gravitational pull, which distorts the seawater surfaces. While some gravitational forces are falling directly on sea surface, the others are passing tangentially. The forces passing tangentially across the sea surface does more harm than the faces, which are falling directly.

Earth's own gravity being stronger pulls these gravitational forces towards itself to cause a waveform. This force can divide the water especially at places where the depth is shallow.

Maximum depth of red sea is 2211 meters and average depth is 490 meters. Israelites could not cross the 'Red sea' at this depth, but they had crossed the Sea of Reeds, where the depth might have been just a few meters. Earth had exerted a pull at gravitational forces passing tangentially at that particular point, which caused the water surfaces to divide for a period that was enough for them to cross the sea.

Division of the sea of Reeds at the same time Israelites were trying to flee could not have been a mere coincidence. Jesus Christ as a descendant was born to those who after wandering for 40 years in the desert had reached the land of Canaan.
