A pulmonary embolism is an obstruction of a blood vessel in the lungs, usually due to a blood clot, which blocks a coronary artery. Many times a pulmonary embolism is caused by a deep vein thrombosis. A complication where blood clots break off in a major vein. The cause of the clot could have resulted from orthopedic surgery, or pelvic, abdominal, or thoracic surgery. It probably started in the femoral vein or iliac vein. From there, it traveled through the inferior vena cava, through the right atrium of the heart. Then the right ventricle of the heart. Finally, into the pulmonary arteries where it stops.
