In the old days they hanged you for horse stealing. Many states haven't changed that law, so technically, you could be hanged for horse stealing, like in Montana and probably in Wyoming and the Dakotas. They don't actually do that anymore but that is the "on the books" penalty. It varies state by state and you really don't want to get caught doing that. Bad karma.

From the Wyoming Criminal Code-

(e) A person who steals any horse, mule, sheep, cattle, buffalo or swine is guilty of livestock rustling which is a felony punishable by imprisonment for not more than ten (10) years, a fine of not more than ten thousand dollars ($10,000.00), or both.

There must be three witnesses to the crime before you can hang him on the spot without reference to any other authority but yourselves

The hanging has to be reported to the local Sheriff within 7 days or you could be in trouble.

This punishment is rarely enforced in South Texas (only 6 times in the last 10 years in Cameron County)
