The answer to your question lies in understanding the word behind religion and not the later misuses of the English word. Many today interpret religion to indicate ones doctrine and those two are quite different words with quite different meanings. The word religious according to the Oxford and Merriam Webster dictionaries comes from the Latin word "Regilio" which actually means obligation or bond or reverence.

Religious can refer to ones habitual activities such as hygiene or the visiting of a favorite restaurant or pub. It can refer to just about anything that attests to an obligation, bond or reference (even self motivated).

Your question is therefore not related to the word religion or religious, its more accurately related to the word doctrine. Doctrine is what a teacher presents as a body of principals that one either is forced into, or accepts willingly. Being religious toward a doctrine is one who is obligated or bound (either by force or self will) to the principals of that doctrine.

Your question is what percentage of the world is religious, which I will interpret as what percentage of the world is religious toward a doctrine. The answer to that question depends upon which doctrine you are discussing. There are surprisingly few doctrines in the world, although there are many sects to the base doctrines.

1) Hebrew doctrine which is the doctrine given to Moses and includes all those who fall into the categories of either Jewish or Christian. Those defined as religious among Hebrrew doctrine are about one third. There is another third who believe in Hebrew doctrine but are not religious in toward the principals, and another third who align with the doctrine but do not follow the principals at all.

2) Perhaps the single largest doctrine in the entire world is philosophia doctrine. This was the doctrine given to Aristotle by he Oracle of Delphi. Today that doctrine, especially the Stoick and Epicurean versions, has become interwoven into the education systems of most of the Western countries. The doctrine is forced upon the majority of people who attend public education in Western countries today. Those willingly religious to philosophia doctrine are only about 10 to 15 percent. Those who have philosophia doctrine imposed upon them by force, account for some 80 percent of the doctrine. You can research the history of philosophia doctrine and its religious believers in order to understand its vast application into every society on the earth today.

3) Mohammed's doctrine has many adherents. In most countries where this doctrine is practiced, its is a state doctrine, with state punishment based upon the principals of the doctrine. Therefore it its difficult to determine which adherents are actually religious and which are adherents due to the laws of the countries who define that doctrine as the official State doctrine.

4) Finally there are the Asian & Eastern doctrines Buddhism, Confucianism, Taosim, Hinduism and Sikhism. Many hold these doctrines to be very different but in fact their basis is almost identical in every case. Religious adherents to these doctrines is higher, based upon the fact that adherence is voluntary in most cases and not actually forced by the government. True religious practice is actually higher than those adherents to Hebrew doctrine, as the practice has become woven into society over several hundred years.
