According to John W. Jeffries in "Wartime America: The World War II Homefront," during the war the number of employed women shot up by about 50 percent, roughly from twelve million to eighteen million. Between 1940 and 1945 the proportion of women employed grew from 28 to 37 percent and by 1945 women formed 36 percent of the civilian labor force as opposedto 26 percent in 1940 (94-95).
