Stranger in a Strange Land, written by Robert A. Heinlein, tells of Valentine Michael Smith's journey from earthly innocence to god like stature. As with most of his work, Heinlein used the guise of fiction to offer his own view of the world and his version of how the world should be. Throughout this book he challenges our most sacred customs with logic that is hard to refute. He exposes our mores and taboos for the wrongness that he thinks they are, while putting forth his own as a better way. He does this while telling a story that is so involving that you're sad for finishing it.
Briefly: "Mike" is the "Man from Mars" who is wholly innocent. He arrives on Earth and sees humanity with fresh eyes. He sees people loving, hurting, hating and going to war with each other and looks for a better way. He brings the Martian "religion" with him to Earth, and starts teaching people how to transcend the limitations of being human. Of course, due to the rigid narrowness of humanity, people are unable to accept the freedom Mike offers, and he suffers the fate of all those who would rescue humanity from ourselves.
