His Holiness Pope Francis, Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Christ, Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Primate of Italy, Patriarch of the West, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province, Sovereign of Vatican City State, Servant of the Servants of God, etc.

It should be noted that other churches also have popes. For example, both the Greek Orthodox and Coptic Orthodox Patriarchs of Alexandria also carry the title of pope. And there are a few other scattered jurisdictions that also use the title. However, the only church that uses it to denote the supreme head of the whole church is the Roman Catholic Church.

The Popes title is "His Holiness Pope Benedict xv1". Only one other leader shares the title. "His Holiness the Dalai Lama" who is the spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism.

Answer

I would like to note that many other religious leaders including leaders of the eastern rite and orthodox churches hold the title of His Holiness. The Dalai Lama is also not the head of Tibetan Buddhism but only of the gelug school of Buddhism. the Other three schools of Tibetan Buddhism also grant their leaders that title such as His Holiness Sakya Trizin and HH Karmapa to name just two others.

His full formal title is

His Holiness the Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Jesus Christ, Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Primate of Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province, Sovereign of the State of Vatican City, Servant of the Servants of God, Pope Benedict XVI

What is the title of the vicar of Christ on earth?

A:The Roman Catholic Church describes the Pope as the vicar of Christ on earth. However, there is no such title mentioned in the New Testament or the writings of the early church and it was Gregory VII who, 1000 years later, advocated the notion that the Pope is Christ's Vicar.
