The cost ranges between $2,000 and $10,000, depending on the country in which the surgery is performed. In India the estimated cost will be Rs. 30,000/ per eye and extra charges if additional procedures are required.

Corneas are collected by an eye bank within 6 hours of a donor's death, the surgery takes about an hour to perform. Recovery time on this surgery procedure may atleast takes to a year or longer.

Hello, I had a cornea transplant in 1990 for Kertaconous, today is Oct 2011 and the transplant is still excellent. I go in for check ups at the University of Minnesota at least once a year and keep tabs on condition. All is well and good so so Ive had at this point 22 years with the transplant. If you get a transplant, keep up with your follow up appointments, keep an eye on any changes in vision and go to the doctors office right away to take care of any problems before they get worse and out of control.

I went from 20/200 vision on the eye that needed the transplant to at one point as good as 20/10, it was a godsend... I still test out at 20/30 and times or better using corrective lenses.

I have kertaconous in the the other eye also, however that eye stabilized after I turned a bit over 50, this was predicted that the kertrconous would stabilize at this age, so that also was a godsend for me. It was a long wait from age 22 when I was diagnosed but it gave me hope.

Cornea transplants and how long they last, also depends on why the cornea needed to be replaced in the first palce. Check with your eye surgeon on this.

Always look for alternatives to surgery, in my case I had no more options. Medical advances now give you more options than a few years ago. If you are told you need a cornea transplant, get second opinions just to find out more as to your options. For me it saved my sight. I was hopeless and thought I would never see again. I have had over 22 years of good vision now and cherish each and every day I can see. I trust this answer will help you and will give you hope for the future. Never give up, good luck to you.
