"That the fittest members of a species will survive" is certainly not a very accurate answer for the principals of Natural Selection.

Fitness in this context refers to the ability of a species to reproduce, i.e. The fittest is the one that reproduces the most.

Here are the basics

  1. Variations will occur in a species regardless of the environment
  2. Nature will ultimately decide whether the variants will survive though indirectly.
  3. The variants that survive will be able to produce more compared to those that didn't and in the process passing on the beneficial traits.
