Aluminum is found in an ore called Bauxite. Bauxite is made up of two compounds: Iron(III) Oxide Fe2O3 and Aluminum Oxide Al2O3.

Aluminum Oxide is amphoteric (reacts with acids and bases) while Iron(III) Oxide is basic (reacts only with basis). So here are the steps:
  • Bauxite is crushed to increase surface area.
  • Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) is made to react with the crushed Bauxite.
  • Al2O3 dissolves forming Sodium Aluminate
  • Fe2O3 is basic and is insoluble in the alkali.
  • Filter the mixture to remove the insoluble Fe2O3 to get pure Al2O3 (Alumina)

Electrolysis to obtain Aluminum, balanced equation:

2Al2O3 ---> 4Al + 3O2

Al3+ + 2e- --> Al

O2- --> O + 2e-

The method used to extract Cu from its ore depends on the nature of the ore.

How can we extract metal from bauxite ore?

Extracting aluminum from bauxite ore requires a large amount of electricity.

Aluminum and titanium were do you get from?

You extract it form its ore. For titanium you use the kroll process and for aluminum you use electrolysis.

How minerals recovered or extracted from their ores?

The methods used to extract minerals from ores vary; each ore has its own suitable method(s) of extraction. For example, iron can be extracted from its ore through the blast furnace method, while more reactive minerals (such as aluminum) may need to be extracted through electrolysis.

What factors determines the method used to extract a metal?

Its position on the reactivity series. The more reactive the metal, the harder it is to extract from its ore.

What ore is mined in order to obtain aluminum?

Bauxite is the main ore of aluminum.

Is energy saved if we recycle metals?

Yes, you save all the energy that would have been needed to mine fresh ore from the ground and to extract the metal from that ore. The amount of energy needed to collect and sort the recycled metals is insignificant compared to this (especially for metals like aluminum that are very hard to extract from their ores).You only need to use the energy needed to melt the pure metal, which you would have needed anyway after extraction of new metal from fresh ore.

What mineral is in a soda can?

A soda can is made of aluminum, which is not considered a mineral because it is produced by artificial means. Aluminum does not occur in elemental form in nature. The main ore from which we extract aluminum is bauxite, which contains aluminous minerals such as gibbsite, bohemite, and diaspore.

Why cant you extract aluminum from its ore?

Aluminium is too reactive chemically to occur in nature as a free metal. Instead it is found combined in over 270 different minerals. The chief source of aluminum is bauxite ore. (source from Wikipedia.org)
