Keratinization starts when protein in the form of food is digested and the body breaks it down into amino acids. These enter the blood stream and are carried to the papilla and the matrix at the base of the follicle where cells are formed that will eventually create hair.

Keratinization begins in the innermost layer of the epidermis. Keratinization is the maturation and migration of skin cells. This is where Keratin, a fibrous protein responsible for protective properties of the dermis, is produced.

Why do snails die with salt?

Snails do not have a protective layer of dead keratinized cells over their body like we do. So once they come into contact with the salt they become dehydrated and die. For example, we would not die if our skin came into contact with salt. But if we drank large amounts of salt water, we would dehydrate because there isn't a layer of dead keratinized cells lining the inside of our bodies.
