The are two main classifications of drugs pertaining to sleep aid.
The most common like lunesta, ambien and others are classified as sedative hypnotics.
Less commonly used for sleep are benzo's such as Valium, Ativan, or klonopin. The proper term for this class of drugs are barbiturates.
