Although Hester does not seem to agree with her punishment, she makes the best of it by lining it with embroidery and wearing it with a chin held high. The townspeople feel the scarlet letter is Hester's brand of adultery and begin to treat her as an outcast. They cast judgmental glances upon her flaming breast as she becomes the clergymen's image of sin and shame. Hester works to bring a feeling of redemption by reaching out to the poor. She give the poor what bread she can afford - sometimes having it thrown back in her face. The townspeople observing her acts of kindness slowly change their perception of the scarlet letter. No longer admitting it's original meaning, they say it means "Able". Even though the townspeople's view has changed, Hester still feels the ache in her heart that only the shame from letter can bring.

She walks with her head held high, and accepts her punishment of standing on the scaffold and wearing the scarlet A, but she shows no remorse or guilt. Her "attitude" angers the Puritan women, which only causes the Puritan women to resent and hate Hester more. When Hester embroiders the scarlet A with gold thread, the Puritan women feel Hester is mocking the punishment. This is Hester's way of accepting the A she is forced to wear on her bosom. We see throughout the novel a progression of the acceptance of Hester's punishment(s), Pearl (the living sin), and eventually Hester.

Later, she is led to the town scaffold and publicly harangued by the town fathers. She is also forced to forever wear a scarlet letter, A, on her clothing, to acknowledge her sin of adultery. Boston society looks down upon her.
