The penalty for cyber stalking can vary greatly. I will use California as an example. As a lessor charge, a misdemeanor, can carry fines up to $1000 and a year in a California county jail. Or it can be a felony with fines at least $1000 and 5 years in a California State Prison. It also may carry the added stipulation of registering as a life-time sex offender.

The simple act of physical contact with the person or verbal abuse can upgrade it from 1 charge of stalking to several charges of abuse, assault and even attempted murder/manslaughter in some cases.
