depends on the nature and severity off the crime committed.

I'm sure it ranges form community service to fines and jail time.

      • The act of vandalism is termed "criminal mischief" and the degree can range from a class C misdemeanor to a first degree felony depending on circumstances. The range of punishment can be a fine up to $500 for a class C misdemeanor up to 5 to 99 years in prison and a possible fine up to $10,000 for a first degree felony.

In Arkansas, vandalism is considered Criminal Mischief. If the damage caused is more than $500, the crime is considered a Class C felony. This conviction may carry a sentence of 3-10 years in prison and no more than $10,000 in fines. Less than $500 worth of damage is considered a Class A misdemeanor. This conviction carries a sentence of up to 1 year in prison and up to $1,000 in fines. If the damage is more than $2,500 it is considered a Class D felony with a possible sentence of 6 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

In view of its incivility, punishment for vandalism can be particularly severe in some countries. In Singapore, for example, a person who attempts to cause or commits an act of vandalism may be liable to imprisonment for up to 3 years and in conjunction may be punished with caning. The act of vandalism in UK is construed as an environmental crime and may be dealt with an ASBO (Anti-Social Behavior Order). Former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani made a crackdown on vandalism a centerpiece of his anti-crime agenda in the 1990s, asserting that a strong campaign against nonviolent "quality of life" crimes such as vandalism would cause a corresponding decrease in violent crime. However much credit can be given to Giuliani's anti-vandalism crusade, FBI statistics claim that New York's crime rate plummeted during his tenure

In Texas, simple criminal trespass is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by a $2,000 fine and/or a jail sentence of no more than 180 days. However certain characteristics of your trespass can increase the penalties. For example in Texas, if you trespass on agricultural land, are apprehended within 100 feet of the boundary and saw notification that it was protected land or were notified and refused to leave, you are guilty of a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by a $500 fine. If it was done in a habitation shelter, superfund site or critical infrastructure site, it is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a $4,000 fine.

A fine and/or community service are typical penalties for minor vandalism - for instance, defacing a building or a public property. You might also be required to make monetary restitution (pay for the damage).

If you have a past record of such activity, or the damage is extensive, or the act was done out of hatred or racial prejudice, you might receive a stiffer penalty.

If it is a first offense and is relatively minor, you can probably apply to a diversion program (usually through the John Howard Society or similar organizations) and, with the court's approval, have the charges eventually removed. You should make this request at your first court appearance and then, if approved, do whatever the court suggests. By doing so, you will avoid a criminal record.

If you are a habitual offender, you will not likely be eligible for such a program, but you obviously need some kind of help and you can request that of the court also. If you are offered help, take it, and mean it.

On the other hand, if you are just a destructive jackass, good luck.
