Catholic Answer.

The Holy Eucharist is "the source of summit of the Christian life." (Lumen Gentium 11). The Most Holy Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Our Blessed Lord as it was offered on the Cross for our salvation now present under the appearances of Bread and Wine. Our Blessed Lord comes to us in this way for many purposes: as an act of Thanksgiving, as a memorial, as presence, as sacrifice, as source and summit of Church Life; the effects of the Eucharist include: cleanses and separates us from sin, commits us to the poor, communicates the mystery of the communion of the Holy Trinity, establishes the community of believers, as a foretaste of the future life, as growth in Christian life, as an increase of the grace received in Baptism, as the source of conversion and penance, as spiritual food, transforms man through Christ, unites with Christ, unites Christians, unites with the heavenly liturgy, we participate in Christ's sacrificed. (all from the Catechism numbers 790, 805, 950, 1000, 1003, 1074, 1212, 1275, 1322-1419, 1436, 1644, 1846, 2637, 2837, 2845)

What is Holy Communion in regards to the Catholic faith?

.Catholic AnswerThis is a little difficult to answer as I don't know who is asking the question. If a protestant or other non-Catholic is asking what is Communion in regards to the Catholic faith, they might very well be asking what is the Eucharist in regards the Catholic faith. .Communion in the Catholic faith is the Eucharist insofar as it preserves the union with God by fostering that union by making a person more holy especially in practice of the supernatural virtue of charity..Communion is a word in the non-Catholic world which is used to refer to a service, or what Catholics would call the Most Holy Eucharist. The Most Holy Eucharist is the actual Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, of Our Blessed Lord under the appearances of Bread and Wine. The word also refers to the Mass which is the re-presentation of the Sacrifice of Our Blessed Lord on the cross two thousand years ago.

Why is the altar the main focus of Catholic churches?

Because it is where the Eucharistic sacrifice is made. It is where heaven and earth converge as the Holy Spirit brings Christ into the bread and wine, transubstantiating them into the body and blood of Jesus. The Liturgy of the Eucharist is experienced simultaneously on heaven and on earth. So, as Catholics, we participate in the Sacrament of the Eucharist with all other Catholics on earth and the perpetual feast of the Lamb in heaven. Since the Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith, where Christ is present body, blood, soul and divinity, the altar, place of the sacrifice, therefore, holds a station of high importance in our faith.
