The purpose is to spin flags or dance to music in a way that tells a story (in some cases). The guard's show basically goes along with the music in a creative way.

Here's my color guard if you want to see a guard show.

--It can also be used in presenting the colors for military use (which is the one you're most likely referring to, the person who answered previously was talking about marching band colorguard). There are usually the flag bearers and guards (who handle rifles to protect the flag) and they would present the colors during a ceremony, usually in the beginning, which means honoring the American flag and the military branch they are honoring to. (I would only know this because I do marching band colorguard AND AFJROTC Drill Team colorguard for my high school)

The color guard is the visual of what the marching band is playing. yes we may twirl flag but we also toss them and use more than flags. we use chains, streamers, rifles, swords, bungees, pompoms, wings, and batons. there may be other things but it depends on the guard.

I only know this because my coach told me and I am in the color guard at Gahanna Lincoln High School.

What is the difference between color guard and honor guard?

Depending on how far back you go, they are the same thing - color guard has its origins in the military, literally being there to guard the "colors" (aka the flag). Over time it evolved, and you have the modern color guard activity associated with marching bands and winterguards. However, as far as the military is concerned, it IS still called color guard - honor guard is a synonym, most likely used to avoid confusion. For example, at winterguard competitions, there is an honor guard to present the colors.
