Covalent bonding, like ionic bonding, is a term describing the linking between two adjacent atoms. It does not have a goal or purpose. The concept explains the chemical behavior of molecules very well, especially in organic materials.

There isn't much of a purpose it is more like rules of nature. We humans didn't say wouldn't it be cool if baking soda and vinegar reacted together and then made it so. They just react to each other, we discovered this and found ways to make it useful. I am not sure why nature reacts the way it does, what the purpose is, but when we humans expose chemicals to each other to induce a reaction it is because we need what ever by product comes from said reaction to do something "useful". Almost all chemical reactions were/are found by trial and error over hundreds of years of experimentation.

The goal of every atom during a chemical reaction is to become stable, which means they react in such a way as to gain a complete valence shell, usually with eight electrons, except for hydrogen which needs two electrons, either by the sharing of electrons through the formation of covalent bonds, or by forming ionic bonds.

Each atom wants to follow the octet rule and have eight electrons in the valence shell. By bonding with other atoms they can share electrons so each has eight.
