Early roots of jazz dance came from African culture imported by slaves. In Africa, natives danced to celebrate cycles of life: birth, puberty, marriage and death. Children, adults and the elderly all depended on dance to express their cultural beliefs. Drums, string instruments, chimes, reedpipes and other percussion instruments set the beat for the dancers.

Jazz dancing has many purposes, as do many styles of dance. Some people do jazz because they enjoy keeping fit while others may want to make a career out of dancing. Others find that jazz is a good foundation for gymnastics or other styles of dance.

The purpose of Jazz.... It is music played by musicians to impress other musicians. The purpose of listening to jazz.... Is for the musician to hear things that other players are doing, and sort them by various categories. Those categories are basically the following... 1. I can play that, too. 2. I can't play that, so I need to 'cop' it, or learn it. 3. Here is why I am better, deeper, more meaningful, "heavier" than you. 4. Here is why you are heavier than me. 5. Here is why I am special, regardless of the above. Essentially, jazz has become a cat fight at a beauty pageant, except that the medium is music. There are exceptions. Just like in Golf, when you hit a great shot. But for the most part, jazz is a mixture of boasting and envy.

As with most dancing it has no purpose but to dance to a type of music. Swing developed in the 1940's and had since been revised for modern dance. The music is fun and to dance to it is easy to do. Just pick up the beat.
